A Free Step: The Music of John Carter, 1999

Ab Baars is a multi-instrumentalist (clarinets and saxophones) who bounces back and forth between fairly main stream jazz (whatever that is), the avant-garde (whatever that is) and everything in between. He's a charter member of the ICP Orchestra and other Dutch ensembles, as well as a frequent collaborator with international musicians such as Ken Vandermark, Sonic Youth and George Lewis. Like most current clarinet players, Barrs was heavily influenced by John Carter (who also began as a multi-horn player but eventually chose to devote his entire energy toward expressing himself with the clarinet). This album, first released on the BVHaast label, is a excellent hommage to Carter. It was recorded in 1997 and 1998. It's a labour of love.

Enjoy!
