With a Heavy Heart...

It happened last night. My IMC brothers and I completed our run on CKCU-FM. There were five of us. We took to the air waves in 2003. We called it NOW'S THE TIME. We called ourselves the Improvised Music Collective. We played a lot of great music over that six year span. Now it's over.

We had a great run. We made outstanding radio, if I do say so myself. Best of all, last night we left the studio for the final time, better friends than when we'd begun all those years ago.

There have been those who have commented over the years that it is strange that a show named Now's The Time did not use Parker's tune as the theme song for the program. Maybe, maybe not.

So last night we addressed that seeming inconsistency. We began the show with Parker doing his tune live at the Royal Roost and we went out (for the last time) with a jaunty version by Joe Albany - bop pianist extraordinaire and sad/tragic figure (one of many in the world of jazz).

The album is called Bird Live!. It was on the Interplay Records label, recorded January 4, 1979. It was Joe's second to last album. His trio is rounded out by Art Davis on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. The set list is:

Side A
1. Now's The Time
2. Yardbird Suite
3. Bluebird
4. Charlie Parker's Blue

Side B
1. Little Suede Shoes
2. Billie's Bounce
3. Confirmation
4. Barbados

Enjoy!
